You Can Take a College Course on Beyonce and Get Your Credits Too

Rutgers University is offering a college course (complete with credit) on pop culture staple Beyonce called Politicizing Beyoncé and suffice it to say: we want to go to there.

Side note: this is my alma mater and I can’t help but wonder why they couldn’t teach this when I was struggling to find engaging electives? WHY GOD, WHY!?!

The course is taught by doctoral student Kevin Allred and is part of the school’s much-lauded Department of Women’s and Gender Studies.

“This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend,” Allred explained. Instead it focuses on how Queen Bey informs perspectives on race, gender and sexuality by comparing her music videos and lyrics to text from the “Black feminist canon.”

Which isn’t all that weird when you consider there are also classes on wine tasting, collecting mushrooms, the works of David Lynch, a course that views Jane Austen through the movie Clueless and a course merely called Dinosaurs.

Spoilers: I didn’t know you could make dinosaurs that uninteresting.

Although if you’re more of a Jay Z fan, you can always take The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Theodicy of Jay-Z at Georgetown University.
