The Americans - Season 3

Image
TVLINE | Season 1 was very much about Philip and Elizabeth’s marriage, while Season 2 brought more of their family into focus. What’s the theme for Season 3? JOE WEISBERG | We ended up there, as you see at the end of Season 2, with a little bit of a growing disagreement about what they’re going do with Paige. So it’s going continue to have a lot of focus on the family and what to do and growing divisions. Their marriage has been going very well, and they’re very much in love. What happens now when you have serious conflict with your partner about what to do and how to deal with raising your children? TVLINE | Elizabeth and Philip were pretty united this season, compared to last season. But now they’re on opposing sides of this Paige issue. JOEL FIELDS | That’s right. In the first season, the show was able to explore the question of marriage and what is marriage and is their marriage real after all these years? By the end of that first season, the question was answered with Eliz...

TV REVIEW: Orphan Black “Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est”

Image
Orphan Black’s fifth installment of season 2 focuses primarily on the ongoing conflict between Rachel and Helena. The episode, entitled “Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est,” is arguably the weakest hour of the season so far, lacking the organic plotting of previous weeks. But that doesn’t mean the episode is bad, it’s actually quite good. Initially, “Ipsa” feels like it’s built to be a slow-burner, fleshing out some things and building bridges to the second half of the season. And most of the episode works well as a slow-burner, but it all leads up to a weird, unnecessary climax. While it makes sense for Helena to be in that building with a sniper rifle, Sarah’s sudden burst of love for Helena feels unearned, especially considering that she had just recently shot Helena. And considering how ruthless and machine-like Helena has been at times, I find it hard to believe an emotional speech by Sarah would be enough to convince her to put the gun down. Equally perplexing is the odd sex scene be...

Hart of Dixie 3x22 - Second Chance (Season Finale) - Review

Image
I loved this episode and found it an almost entirely satisfying season finale.  It was cute, hilarious, quickly and fluidly paced, heartwarming and promising.  Now that the show has gotten its true spirit back after some pacing issues throughout season 3, I'm optimistic that we will see a grand and full return to form for season 4.  Let's review and discuss the exciting developments in our last glimpse of Bluebell until...midseason 2015?  Ooh, that's going to be a long wait!  Here's what went down... What really set the scene for how fabulous this episode was going to be was the opening sequence of Dash walking through Bluebell and recording some observations for his blog.  According to the wise and observant town spokesman, the apocalypse was nigh.  Wade was leaving town to be a successful businessman (?!); AnnaBeth was pondering a proposal from a Gainey (!); Lemon and George's restaurant, Fancie's, was in dire straits following a little fir...

Hart of Dixie 3x21 - Stuck - Review

Image
It was an eventful episode of Hart of Dixie , what with Wade and Zoe getting closer, AnnaBeth getting a proposal, and Fancie's getting an inferno!  Here's what happened in Bluebell this week and what I thought. Wade and Zoe: It took us all the way until the twenty-first episode of Season 3, but we finally got an actual Zade-centric hour.  Yay!  As a Jane Austen fan, I appreciated the little Emma homage the writers created by having Zoe decide to become the town matchmaker.  Or, as Zoe quipped proudly at the Rammer Jammer before being hilariously dissed by Wade, a "love maker."  Like Emma Woodhouse, Zoe took on this new hobby in a flush of success from one occasion where she actually did facilitate true love.  But it was hard to replicate those results again, especially when Zoe decided that her next matchmaking "victim" should be none other than Crazy Earl.   Earl is a neat character in a few respects.  He's always funny and...

Revolution 2x19 "S#!& Happens" Review: And You Thought You Were Having a Bad Day

Image
This week’s episode of Revolution , “S#!& Happens,” was written by Anne Cofell Saunders and directed by John Showalter. One site also lists David Reed as a co-writer on the episode. Reed is a writer’s assistant and was also script coordinator on Supernatural . As always, Showalter delivers a terrific episode with some notable performances, particularly from Tracy Spiridakos and Giancarlo Esposito. Billy Burke delivers in an episode in which Miles is tortured both inside and out. While the episode itself was solid, I can’t help but feel that the ridiculously long hiatus since the powerful “Austin City Limits” really lessened the impact this episode should have had.              The episode picks up pretty much where we left off with Charlie (Spirdakos) stumbling out of the building where she was forced to kill Jason (JD Pardo). We pick up with her ...

Penny Dreadful 1x01 - Night Work - Review

Image
*This Review Contains Spoilers* Do not read this review unless you have watched the episode, now available on Showtime.com, as it will make reference to specific scenes and occurrences. "Do not be amazed at anything you see. And don't hesitate" With those words, Ethan Chandler, as well as the audience, are swept into a world found only between the steam and shadows of Victorian London. Familiar ghouls and legitimately scary moments (I admit I jumped in my seat a few times) haunt this lavishly shot imagining of what would happen if the literary ghosts came out to haunt the real world. The title Penny Dreadful comes from publications of the same name common to 19th century England. Penny dreadfuls were small, cheap magazines containing sensational short stories aimed at working class young boys. Think of them as the MAD magazine of the Industrial Age. Often these serialized stories featured frightening or unsavory characters such as Varney the Vampire, Dick Turpin ...
